What is it and how does it work?
Tesamorelin is a stabilized synthetic analog of human growth hormone releasing factor (GHRH). It binds to the GHRH-R receptor on pituitary somatotropes and stimulates pulsatile release of endogenous growth hormone, with documented increase in serum IGF-1 in clinical studies. The literature describes a preferential effect on visceral abdominal adipose fat in HIV-associated lipodystrophy cohorts.
Clinical evidence: Falutz et al. (NEJM 2007, PMID 17984164) in patients with HIV-associated lipodystrophy documented 15-20% visceral fat reduction with 2 mg/day SubQ × 26 weeks. Stanley et al. (JCI 2014, PMID 24911148) reported improvement of hepatic steatosis in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.
